Art as Prayer

···

What is art?

Art is an expression of Soul.
A journey from the intangible to the tangible.

It captures emotions & thoughts in time & space.
It can be a painting, a writing, a movement or a song.
It can be extended to what we thing are mundane everyday activity such as cleaning, cooking or driving.

Creating a business can be art, having a conscious conversation, nurturing a relationship can be art.
In a wider sense, life itself is art.

Making art is a gateway to God.
It is a practice that connects us deep within.

Picking up a pen and staring at a blank page is terrifying.
Looking into the abyss is terrifying.

Because God meets us in the unknown.
When we are stripped naked, surrendered.

They say as a creative, whenever you’re creating (writing, drawing, or any other craft you practice) and you face a moment in the process where it is uncomfortable or impossible to continue – this is where the gold lies and where you have to dig deeper.

This is the story that wants to be told.
This is where God leads us to.
This is where you will meet God.

Thinking of the creative process as a devotional practise makes it easier for me to create. Because I remember I’m not alone.
I’m with God.
I am God experiencing myself through art.

My creations are therefore a sacred offerings to the world.
They are in a sense not mine.
They are a curious exploration of what I am, of what God is.
They have a life on their own and flow through my body into form.

As a devotee of Truth,
those creations closest to truth
are the most difficult, most vulnerable,
yet most liberating ones to manifest.
